Iran / Sistan and Baluchestan / To Zahedan

Sarbaz

The last leg of our trip led us through rural Baluchestan towards the capital of the province, Zahedan.

On the route we found a very warm welcome at local families showing us their handicraft, serving us delicious local food and sharing their life stories with us.

​As foreigners (even Iranians from other provinces count as foreign) we were an attraction for the children of the neighbouring families as well.

On the route to Zahedan we had bad weather and rain. During the spring of 2019, several Iranian provinces, also Sistan and Baluchestan, were badly hit by floods. 

On the way, we saw a traditional cemetery, visited Bampour castle and saw a cypress tree that has significance for the Zoroastrian people. Many of these cypress trees are a couple of thousand years old and are protected by locals.

Zahedan

Zahedan is the capital of the province with a population of roughly 600,000. Zahedan was our final destination. We visited the bazaar, older parts of the city and museums, and made day trips from Zahedan.
